The Centrelink Supplement Most Renters Never Claim — And the Simple Step That Could Add Hundreds to Your Fortnightly Payment

Commonwealth Rent Assistance adds up to $219.40 per fortnight — and most eligible renters never claim it. Here's the simple step to start receiving it from your next Centrelink payment.

There’s a Centrelink supplement called Commonwealth Rent Assistance — worth up to $219.40 per fortnight for a single renter in 2026 — that a significant number of eligible Australians have never claimed. Not because they don’t qualify. Not because it’s difficult. But because no one told them it existed, and Centrelink doesn’t proactively remind you to register your rent details.

Rent Assistance (officially called Commonwealth Rent Assistance or CRA) is a fortnightly supplement added on top of your regular Centrelink payment. It’s available to anyone receiving JobSeeker, Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Parenting Payment, Youth Allowance, Austudy, or ABSTUDY — as long as they’re renting privately and paying above the minimum rent threshold.

There’s no separate application. No waitlist. No complex process. You just need to enter your current rent amount in your Centrelink account via myGov — and once it’s there, the payment is calculated automatically and added to your next fortnightly deposit.

The March 2026 indexation update raised the rates again. A single person paying $800 a fortnight in rent would now receive the full maximum of $219.40. A couple with one child would receive up to $257.88. Over a year, that adds up to over $5,700 for a single renter — money that many people are simply not receiving because their rent details were never entered into the system.

If you’ve ever moved address, changed your rent amount, or gone from living with others to renting on your own, there’s a meaningful chance your Centrelink accommodation details don’t reflect your current reality. A two-minute check via myGov will either confirm you’re getting everything you’re entitled to — or reveal a payment you’ve been missing.

Log into myGov, open Centrelink, go to “My details,” and check your accommodation section. Confirm your current fortnightly rent amount is entered correctly. If it’s not there, add it. Changes take effect from your next payment cycle — sometimes that’s just days away.
