Centrelink’s rent assistance centrelink 2026 rates were updated in March — quietly, without any notification to most recipients. If you’re already receiving Rent Assistance, your payment should have gone up automatically. But if your rent details are outdated, out of date, or simply missing from your account, you may still be receiving the old rate — or nothing at all.

Here’s how Centrelink Rent Assistance works: it’s indexed twice a year (March and September) to keep pace with rising costs. The March 2026 update increased the maximum payment to $219.40 per fortnight for single renters with no children — up from the previous rate. For families with children, the maximum is higher still.
The update applies automatically — but only if your rent details are already correctly recorded. If your accommodation type shows “not renting,” or if your rent amount hasn’t been updated since you last moved, the new rate means nothing for you. You’re still receiving whatever the old calculation produced, or zero.
This affects more people than you’d expect. Many Australians receive Centrelink payments and assume that housing details are automatically updated — they’re not. Each time you move, each time your rent changes, and each time your living situation changes, you need to update Centrelink separately.
The check is genuinely simple: log into myGov, navigate to your Centrelink account, and look at “Accommodation” under your details. Confirm your current fortnightly rent amount is entered correctly. If it’s wrong or missing, update it — your next payment will reflect the corrected amount.
If you’ve been underpaid for an extended period — especially if your rent has gone up in the last year or two and you haven’t updated Centrelink — it’s worth calling Services Australia on 132 300 to discuss your options. Some backdating may be available depending on your circumstances. The earlier you act, the more likely you are to recover what you’ve missed.
