Rent Assistance 2026 rates have just been updated — and if you’re on Centrelink and renting privately, there’s a real chance you’re either receiving less than you’re owed, or missing the payment entirely. Services Australia estimates that a significant portion of eligible Australians have never properly registered their rent details, meaning they’re paying full rent while leaving money on the table every single fortnight.

The thing most people don’t realise is that Centrelink won’t automatically pay you Rent Assistance just because you’re renting. You have to enter your rent details into your account — and if you’ve never done that, or if your details are outdated, you’re getting zero. For a single person, that could be up to $219.40 extra per fortnight. For a family with children, even more.
The March 2026 indexation update pushed rates up across all family types. That means if you were receiving CRA before, you should now be getting slightly more. And if you weren’t receiving it — this is the moment to check.
Here’s who typically misses out: older Australians on Age Pension who were never told this supplement existed, JobSeeker recipients who updated their address but not their rent details, and people who moved to a new rental but assumed Centrelink would figure it out automatically. None of those assumptions are true — Centrelink needs you to tell them.
The check itself takes about two minutes. Log into myGov, go to your Centrelink account, find “Accommodation details,” and verify your current rent amount is accurately entered. If it’s blank or shows an old address or old rent, update it. Your next payment will include the corrected CRA amount.
If you’ve been missing CRA for an extended period, it’s worth contacting Services Australia on 132 300 to ask whether any backdating is possible. It’s not guaranteed, but in some circumstances — especially where the error was a system issue or a genuine oversight — they can adjust past payments. Don’t assume it’s too late to ask.
