JobSeeker Payment Over 55: The $866-Per-Fortnight Rate Centrelink Won’t Always Apply Automatically

The gap between the standard rate and the 55-plus rate is real money. Over a year, it adds up to hundreds of dollars that should have been paid automatically. For people living tightly on a fixed income, that difference matters.

You stay on this website. No payment required.

Here’s what you need to understand. JobSeeker Payment isn’t a flat rate for everyone. Centrelink uses a tiered system where your age and how long you’ve been on payment both affect the amount you receive. The $866 per fortnight rate for 2026 is specifically for single recipients who are 55 or older and have been continuously receiving JobSeeker Payment for at least nine months.

Both conditions have to be true at the same time. If you’re 55 but you’ve only been on payment for six months, the higher rate doesn’t apply yet. If you’ve been on payment for two years but you’re 54, it doesn’t apply either. When both boxes are ticked — age and continuous payment period — the rate should change automatically. Except when it doesn’t.

The problem is systemic. Centrelink’s systems rely on accurate, up-to-date records to trigger automatic rate adjustments. If your date of birth is recorded incorrectly, if there’s a perceived break in your payment history, or if a processing delay has occurred, the higher rate simply won’t be applied — and no notification will be sent to tell you that something’s wrong.

Many people discover the discrepancy by accident: a phone call about an unrelated matter, a family member with the same situation who was getting more, or a chance reading of a forum thread where someone mentioned the 55-plus threshold. That’s not how it should work. You shouldn’t have to stumble onto the fact that you’ve been underpaid.

What you can do right now is check. Log into myGov, navigate to your Centrelink account, and look at your payment details. The base rate figure will tell you whether you’re on the standard rate or the higher 55-plus rate. If you’re eligible and the higher rate isn’t showing, you have solid grounds to contact Services Australia and request a correction — and potentially a backpayment.

The formal process isn’t complicated. You call 132 850, explain that you believe you’re entitled to the higher rate based on your age and time on payment, and ask them to review your account. If the error is confirmed, the correction typically happens quickly. If there’s a dispute, you have the right to request an Authorised Review Officer review.

Beyond the rate itself, turning 55 and hitting nine months on payment also changes your mutual obligation requirements significantly. You’re no longer held to the same job application quotas as younger recipients. Voluntary work, community service, part-time employment, and approved study can all satisfy your obligations at this stage. That’s a meaningful quality-of-life improvement for many people.

The information on this page doesn’t replace a direct conversation with Services Australia — rates change with indexation, your individual circumstances affect the exact amount you receive, and some situations are more complex than others. But knowing the threshold exists, knowing what triggers it, and knowing that Centrelink can and does miss the automatic update is information worth having.

If you’re 55 or older, on JobSeeker Payment, and approaching or past nine months — check your rate today.
