Super Was Listed on Your Payslip — Did It Reach Your Fund?

Jlor Digital · Australia1 of 2 · Understand the issue

The super line on a payslip is easy to skim past. It looks reassuring: a figure, a fund name, perhaps a total for the year. But if you want to check employer super contributions, the useful question is what your fund actually received for the period you are reviewing.

Fair Work explains that a payslip can show contributions paid or intended to be paid. It is therefore a starting record, not a substitute for checking fund transactions. This guide shows how to compare the two, allow for the applicable timing rules and prepare a clear follow-up.

Begin with a period you can follow

Choose one employer and a defined stretch of work, such as your first month in a role or the period around a job change. Gather those payslips and open the transaction history from the relevant super fund. Working through one period first is easier than trying to explain an entire year at once.

Put the records side by side. Note the employer, pay dates, super amounts shown and any fund payments you can identify. If you do not recognise a transaction label, ask the fund what it means. Keep uncertain matches separate from confirmed ones rather than forcing the totals to agree.

Payment timing changed on 1 July 2026

Under Payday Super, employer contributions generally need to reach the fund within 7 business days of payday. Some circumstances allow longer, including a 20-business-day period for certain first contributions or new employees. Check the applicable rule before treating a recent entry as overdue. Fair Work explains the current timing requirements.

For work periods before 1 July 2026, check the rules and due dates that applied then. Do not apply today’s payday timetable to an old payslip. Likewise, do not rely on an older article describing quarterly payments when reviewing a current payday.

Check the contribution, not just the balance

A total account balance is a broad snapshot. For this task, work from identifiable contribution entries. A change in the headline balance does not tell you which employer payment arrived. Write down the exact transaction you are trying to match, and ask about that entry when contacting the fund.

Employer super is an employer contribution. It should not generally be described as money deducted from every salary. If the payslip also shows salary sacrifice or another contribution type, label those separately in your notes so you can ask which amount each line represents.

Turn a concern into a specific question

“My super looks wrong” is hard to investigate. “I am checking the payslips for this period and cannot identify the matching fund entries” gives payroll a defined issue to review. Ask when payment was made, which fund received it and how much was sent.

You can use a short written request and keep the reply with your records. If an explanation is given verbally, make a dated note of what was said. These are practical organising steps; they do not establish that an employer has breached its obligations.

When the records still do not line up

The ATO provides guidance for unpaid, late or incorrectly directed employer super. Its process starts with checking entitlement, the expected contribution and the relevant records. An unresolved difference is a reason to follow that guidance, not a promise that a particular amount will be recovered.
